The Second Edition of Mastering Statistics Using JASP has been expanded to a full 16-week course in statistical methods with the inclusion of two new chapters on Factorial and Repeated Measures ANOVA. All of the chapters have been revised to improve style and clarity, and to incorporate JASP statistics, tables, and figures more completely into each of the topics. The chapter teaching students how to use JASP has been completely rewritten and expanded. It now provides a much more comprehensive introduction to (a) creating and editing data files using both a separate spreadsheet program and JASP's built-in Data Editor, (b) selecting and analyzing data using JASP's point and click interface and (c) presenting the results in well-formatted tables and figures. The text retains its friendly, conversational style and remains accessible to students with limited mathematical backgrounds.
The goal for this book has always been to help students develop a strong conceptual understanding of statistics-hence the title, Mastering Statistics. That objective remains the focus of the Second Edition. To that end I provide detailed verbal explanations for all statistical concepts and formulas, clarify important concepts using pictures and graphs, and use realistic and engaging examples to explain how different statistical procedures work.
A second objective is to teach students to use statistics as a tool to answer questions about the causes of events in the real world. To accomplish that I've eliminated all calculator computations of statistics by incorporating the extremely powerful and completely free data analysis program called JASP. JASP is a "point and click" program which students have no difficulty learning how to use. It is integrated throughout the text for statistical examples and figures, and for solving challenging end-of-chapter practice problems in data analysis and interpretation. The text is explicitly multivariate in its orientation and the chapters on correlation, linear regression, and analysis of variance teach students to approach research in that fashion.
The third objective is to keep the cost of learning statistics to a minimum. Students already have enough educational debt. Textbook prices are out of sight and, frankly, on-line courses are not the answer. This text is published by Amazon KDP and is priced as low as possible-and JASP is free!
