Die Frage, warum Gott so viel Leiden zuläßt, ist so alt wie die Menschheit selbst und beschäftigt sie bis zur Stunde. Sämtliche Versuche, die scheinbare Inkompatibilität von Gottes Allmacht, seiner Güte und der Existenz des Übels durch die Uminterpretation eines dieser drei Begriffe auf rein theoretischem Wege lösen zu wollen, sind bislang aporetisch geblieben. Eine zumindest existentiell befriedigendere 'Lösung' der Frage, warum Gott das Übel nicht verhindert, scheint im Anschluß an Luthers Vorstellung dreier lumina am Ende von De servo arbitrio möglich: der Glaube, der um die Verborgenheit Gottes weiß, die Hoffnung, die auf Gottes rettendes Eingreifen pocht, und die Liebe, die sich Leidenden vorbehaltlos zuwendet. The question as to why God allows so much suffering is as old as mankind itself and will continue to preoccupy us. All attempts to solve theproblem of the apparent incompatibility of God's omnipotence, his kindness and the existence of evil by reinterpreting one of these three concepts in a purely theoretical manner have remained aporetic. A possibly more satisfactory "solution" to this problem, from an existential perspective atleast, of why God does not prevent evil, seems to be possible in the context of Luther's concept of three lumina at the end of "De servo arbitrio": faith, which is aware of God's seclusion, hope, which insists onGod's saving intervention, and love, which is given unconditionally to those who are suffering.
