The article first examines die efficacy of the formulation "indicative and imperative" which was introduced by Bultmann into die debate on Pauline ethics. The result shows that the oversimplified indicative-imperative schema does not do justice to die complexity and diversity of the Pauline foundation of rules and should be abandoned. Secondly, recent alternative approaches to Pauline ethics are outlined, although traditio-historical, theological, linguistic and socio-historical approaches remain limited in their own ways. The radical consequence of a renouncement of not only the indicative-imperative schema but also completely of the imposition of an "ethic" of Paul in the sense of a reflective theory of action is then to set against this an "implicit" ethic that includes eight elements: forms ofspeech, norms, contexts, logic of values, forms of argumentation, subject of action, community ethos and claim to validity. The individual aspects ofsuch an approach are examined more closely with the example of the First Letter to the Corinthians.
