Subject of this article is the definition of the idea of ´Libertas Christiana´ in modern society. First, the course of the idea of liberty is described from a historical perspective, starting with the Reformation (M. Luther) via the Age of Enlightenment (I. Kant) and Romanticism (F. Schleiermacher) to the antinomies of living in liberty in modern socity. Following the dialectics of the objective idea of culture on the one hand and the subjective realisation of culture on the other hand, the importanceof the idea of Christian liberty is being described systematically. Education to liberty makes it possible to deal in a reflected way with the plurality of opportunities and besetting claims of modern life.
