The essay examines theories which study the relation of faith, life and learning - a contribution to the 25th anniversary of this periodical and an allusion to its title. What is the relation of religion (see 'religious' education!) and faith? 'Religion' is a very vague concept which unites only certain characteristics of different types of faith and of particular religions. The essay, there fore, concentrates on common denominators of faith and learning, i.e. the special tendency in establishing a personal identity intellectually and emotionally on the background of the Christian and especially the reformatory tradition. This identity a gift, not a product of religious ambitions - cannot be interpreted in purely empiricist or hermeneutical schemes, but requires a special conception of the (eschatological) integration of human life, which could make use of the rhetorical conception of 'affects'.
