William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English writer, physician and agent in the MI6. Maugham wrote several short stories and novels. Of Human Bondage (1915) is widely regarded as his masterpiece. The short story "The Force of Circumstance", which was first published in 1951 in The Complete Short Stories is one of Maugham's Malaysian stories.
