The Wave is based on a true incident at an American High School. History teacher Ben Ross wants to show his students how fascist organisations work. Thus, he creates The Wave which gets out of control. The Wave begins as a class-room experiment but it soon spreads all over the school. Its members are highly committed to it and lose their individuality as well as their respect for different opinions. As unquestioning followers they suppress others and act similar to fascist groups. The novel describes how the movement rapidly conquers the school and how it deeply changes its members' personalities.
