In connection with the Berlin Mosque and the Buddhist House, two small books were published, each labelled as a "catechism" in the title, which serve as an introduction to the teachings and practices of Islam and Buddhism for German-speaking practitioners. The article examines the two catechisms with regard to their position in the field of comparable catechism-like summaries and with regard to their contextualisation in the new Berlin religious communities. It emphasises the aspect that in both cases a non-European formatting of knowledge is offered to European people - contrary to the prevailing tendency at the time to bring European-formatted knowledge to other regions of the world under colonial conditions.
