The early reactions of Christianity towards the Islam demonstrate not only hostility and apologetic methods, but also an attempt to redefine Christian identity. For John of Damascus Islam was just a Christian heresy which has to be combated in an adequate manner. Theodor Abu Qurrah introduced a new method of rational argumentation to support his own Christian identity. Mar Timotheos offers an example for the inculturation of Christianity in an Arabian context.
