Fußnote: Hamann, Johann Georg: Reflections on Church Hymns? -
This essay begins with an introduction on Hamann?s biographical situation which gave cause to his meditating the Bible and, consecutively, few hymns. It proceeds to more detailed observations on his song meditations, commenting i. a. on their connection to the ?Biblical Reflections?, their structure and style, as well as the musical and poetic aspects of the songs as they are virtually ignored by Hamann. The last subsection considers the theological content of the meditations in connection to Hamann?s later theological interest. The most prominent feature is that of sin, grace and forgiveness, which is clearly due to his recent conversion. The second most prominent motive is that of the concept of man being God?s image, and it is to remain so in Hamann?s later thinking. Further key subjects are critique of reason, ethics and eschatology.
