This article offers a reconstruction of the ecclesiological approach of Gunther Wenz. It begins by analzing Wenz's account of the societal and political contexts of modern ecclesiology as determined by the distinction between church and state that emerged from the Reformation. It then elaborates on the Protestant understanding of the nature and mission of the church based on the Augsburg Confession which expresses an ecclesiological consensus among the Lutheran and Reformed movements of the Reformation. In light of this, the article finishes by presenting Wenz's critical evaluation of the goal and fundamental issues in ecumenism, which is not optional but required for a modern ecclesiology and its possible impact in a secularizing world.
