The relation between Reformation and education ("Bildung") is a complex phenomenon, one the actors originally did not name with the expression as a terminus technicus. The processes of change within church and society, initiated by the Reformation, soon provoked a real crisis of school and university as traditional institutions of the education system. The leaders of the Reformation addressed this crisis with different interpretations of the new idea of general priesthood of all believers. Pedagogical discussions today treat education as an issue of justice and differentiat between justice as distribution, as participation, and as estimation. In this way, the theme of education can be reintroduced in the central discussions of the Reformers: Different aspects of the idea of the general priesthood of all believers play an important role in defining and specifying a concept of reformational education theory.
