Neu Abschied vom Konsens? Die Pseudopigraphie der Pastoralbriefe als Herausforderung an die neutestamentliche Wissenschaft
Zeitschriftenartikel

The scholarly opinion about the pseudepigraphal character of the Pastoral Epistles seemss well established. Yet, despite the widespread agreement about the basic features of their pseudonymity, the interpretation of the letters in detail is far from beingg homogeneous. Whereas the commentaries of J.D. Quinn/W.C. Wacker, L. Oherlinnei, and A. Weiser provide different perspectives based on the common presuppositions, L.T. Johnson has boldly challenged the scholarly consensus. He does not simply repeat the well-known argumentes for the authenticity of the Pastorals, but clearly shows the wrong tracks of the research over the last 200 years. Altough Johnson's challenge has to be taken seriously, he himself is not convincing in arguing for the authenticity of all three letters. Taking into account the data of the recenrt research on pseudonymity in antiquity, the treatment of the Pastorals as a unit - either authentic or pseudonym - is not compelling at all and causes serious problems for an appropriate understanding of the terms.
