"After Dogmatics"? Beobachtungen zu evangelischen Systematischen Theologie in den USA und in Deutschland an der Jahrhundertschwelle
Zeitschriftenartikel

This essay was prepared primarily for a German readership. It offers a set of observations about the situation of Protestant systematic theology both in the United States and in Germany. In its first half, the essay describes the most noteworthy as well as promising developments in American systematic theology by focusing on ten distinct phenomena. In addition, it points out significant threats to and challenges for the ongoing integrity of Protestant systematic theology in the United States. In the second part, the essay focuses on the German situation. Instead of a detailed description, it first offers three broad observations, secondly, puts forth a constructive thesis about the identity, task, and future of Protestant systematic theology, and third, raises ten concluding critical questions about the present state of systematic theology in Germany. As the title conveys, the author regards the situation in both contexts as serious, but not hopeless. The future of systematic theology is in danger, but not irreversibly to.
