Aggression is a topic surprisingly neglected in recent theological ethics. Even though many studies deal with aspects of political or individual power, the phenomenon of aggression, closer to the notion of violence than to power, is either still explained by the classical theories of Freud, Lorenz, Adler and Bandura, and/or it is dealt with in a highly dogmatic interpretation arguing for eschatological hope and God's eternal love. Younger interdisciplinary approaches, however, show the complex bio-psycho-social interaction of aggression: Once aggression has become neuro-physiologically manifest it can neither be overcome by the simple appeal to act reasonably, nor is it linked to predictable moral values, or could be overcome by the simple reference to the Word of God. Consequently educational programs and theological ethics have to better understand the antinomic dynamics within the process of personality-building concerning the intertwinement of evolutionary and biographical factors, of conscious and pre-conscious movements, of stimuli, perceptions, motives, values and habits.
