The article describes the developments in Germany in the past decades with special regard to the situation in Ludwigshafen, where the church-subsidised protestant university was recently dissolved into a faculty of the local state university of applied sciences. The lack of a concerted action on part of the regional churches in Germany is obvious. The tasks and challenges of protestant universities of applied sciences are outlined.
