The process of accounting for sexual abuse in the Protestant church and Diaconia poses great challenges for the institutions involved. The participation of those affected is repeatedly mentioned as a central requirement. But who are these victim-survivors? Why is their involvement so important? Why is it so challenging? And how can it be specifically designed? The article explores these questions, clarifies terms and brings together various insights. At its core is the development and analysis of three arguments that point to the absolute necessity of the participation of those affected: the expert-argument, the interest-argument and the empowerment-argument.
