In 2015 the University of Göttingen established a Collaborative Re-search Centre "Education and Religion". The present paper outlines the actual conflicts between educational formation and religion. The research project seeks to reconstruct the historical roots of these conflicts based on a working definition of these two modern no-tions which can be fruitfully applied to Greek and Roman ritual practice and philosophy as well as to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The relationships between education and religion will be analyzed in four thematic fields: storage of knowledge, interpretations, transmissions and discourses. In each case there will be a focus on the interaction between education and religion as distinguishable areas as well as on religious formation as a unity of practice and interpretation. The findings of this research unit will open up comparative perspectives on the history of religions, the history of culture and social history in antiquity and the middle ages. They are also instructive with regards to the present in which the aforementioned relationships and configurations are still operative.
