Thus far, the theme of hope in Luther's theology has been explored primarily under the aspect of reformatory reversal. Yet a distinctly systematic perspective reveals that Luther does give importance to this topic. It is the essence of a hope based on the crucified Christ and focusing on him or God's mercy respectively that fundamentally provides the simultaneity of being sinner and justified (and everything related to it) with a point of culmination in human experience. Just because of this simultaneity, hope is certain, both as anticipation and longing. In and against all temptation, hope as virtus spiritus sancti saves what faith believes; it hopes against all appearances and thus deals with the deus absconditus. Amidst the experience of the deus absconditus, it is able to console and offer comfort to others, especially by works of charity.
