The member churches of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) have successively introduced blessing services for homosexual life partnerships which are in part only distinct from church weddings by their designation. As far as comprehensible reasons based on confession are adduced, there is no consensus on which to ground a common introduction of such ceremonies. But it is possible to silence the scruples of the objectors by a rule that serves to protect minorities or to leave the final decision to individual congregations. This includes the concession that there is no unity of confession as regards this issue. This rule will make the tensions visible which the Protestant churches will have to live with. But then it is not necessarily the supporters of blessing services for same-sex couples alone who will have to bear these tensions.
