In the year marking the 500th anniversary of his birth, Calvin and the Reformation as it was shaped by him attracted an astonishing degree of attention, which extended far beyond the professional sphere. The wealth of literature and scholarly events dedicated to his work and to the history of its reception is hard to keep track of. Still one can recognize certain characteristic trends. Surprisingly strong was the interest in Calvin's significance for Western European and transatlantic cultural, political and economic history. From a theological and ecumenical perspective as well new approaches to the reformer have opened up. There has also been notable progress regarding new editions of source texts. For specialized Calvin scholarship the anniversary year was indeed successful, but there are still a number of desiderata.
