Das Leben in schillernder Vielfalt zum Lexikon der Bioethik

Korff, Wilhelm ... [Hrsg.]: Lexikon der Bioethik. -
This review is concerned with the conceptual history of Bioethics: in particular, the origins of "Bioethics" in the USA, where an Encyclopaedia of Bioethics was published in 1978 for the first time. It discussed the connection between life (Bio) and moral values (Ethics) inherent in "Bioethics", thereby raising the controversial nature of this subject. This became clear for example in the Bioethics Convention of the Council of Europe: the "Convention on Human Rights and Biomedicine". Two types of understanding need to be distinguished: a narrower view of Bioethics as medical ethics, and a broader view of Bioethics as comprehensive instructions for responsible action with every form of life. This dictionary/encyclopaedia also deals with another form of understanding, namely particular emphasis on environmental ethics. A basic problem consists of the assignment of information to the actual state of knowledge and its ethical evaluation. Conception, contents, and methodological approach of this dictionary/encyclopaedia are dealt with individually. Special attention is given to the role of ethics in relation co factual statements; an addition to the specific contribution of Theology. In sum, the open questions raised by Bioethics and the strengths and weaknesses of this three-volume encyclopaedic work are appraised in the conclusion.
