In a dialogue with Gerd Theißen's great book "A theory of primitive Christian religion" (London 1999) the author reflects on the significance of a concept of "myth" for early Christian Christology. A concept of "myth" should include both its semiotic and its functional dimension. Such a concept helps to widerstand the narrative character of NT Christology, the centrality of the gospels within the New Testament, and the specific character of the gospels as stories transcending their own narrated time. The functional dimension opens the door to a history of religion of early Christianity. Its task could be to show the historical ambivalence of semiotically constructed "cathedrals".
