The article is dedicated to a central topic of research on Paul's letter to the Romans from an unusual perspective: in order to examine the statements on the spirit, the way in which (pnevmais) used in Greek inscriptions is investigated. This shows that it always refers to the life-sustaining element of the human being, against which flesh and body perish with death. Several statements in the letter to the Romans can be reinterpreted on the basis of this anthropological concept of Pneuma. This is clear in Romans 1:9and8:16, where as from the perspective of epigraphy, other statements on the Pneuma (1:4; 2:29; 7:6; 8:10, 27) can also be understood as statements on the character of the human spirit.
