"Der Gerechte wird sich freuen [...] und wird seine Füße baden in des Gottlosen Blut" (Ps 58,11) zum Beten der Rachepsalmen
Zeitschriftenartikel

The essay probes the question whether or not the so-called Psalms of Revenge may be prayed either in private settings or churches. In his Finkenwalde sermon on Psalm 58, Dietrich Bonhoeffer considers them as »Psalm[s] of an Innocent«; it is thus questionable whether a mere christological reading does justice to these psalms or rather subordinates them to the respective christological preconception. Alternatively one should try to pay attention to the strangeness of these texts apparent in their narrative sense and theological horizon. It is only then that one can (with Bonhoeffer) develop the christological reading as an additional level of these texts that enables us to understand these verses as God's word in human words.
