This analysis sheds light on the recent reform discussion within the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) from the perspective of a theory of secularization. It describes the strategies and ways of self-description of the EKD in reaction to the changing relation of its social environment to religion as such, which proves problematic to the church. Central to the description of these changes is the term of "indifference" - indifference of the secular environment towards both the meaning offered by religion and towards its functionality. The article aims at presenting various mechanisms and the semantics of this reform discourse as part of the solution to the problem of indifference. Doing so, it also revises the mutual compatibility of reform efforts.
