>Bildung< (culture) that very German word has become in current academic politics a fashionable word without any reflection about its actual meaning. The history of such term is helpful in conceptual criticism. Research so far has paid too little attention to the origins of this word in Lutheran Pietism. Patristic tradition conveyed by Johann Arndt and Gottfried Arnold can be assumed. Man is created in God's image and saved by the image of Christ. Klopstock's >Messiah< plays a central role in the reception of this word in modern times. Final remarks criticize the senseless use of this term, Adolf von Harnack's lectures and essays give good stimulation for such criticism.
