Revised versions of the two most important German Bible translations (Lutherbibel and Einheitsübersetzung) were published in 2016/2017. An analysis of the translation of the verb "peirazo" in the Gospels shows that there was no action taken to mitigate the possibly harmful perception of this word in its context. The effect is that Jesus' Jewish enemies are semantically associated with the devil. This made it virtually impossible to understand that passages intrinsically connected with this word had been translated in a way which depicted the Jews far more negatively than warranted by the Greek text. An important source of this anti-Jewish slant are the philological tools of New Testament studies currently in use. The editors of these tools were influenced in their understanding of the semantics of the Greek text by Latin reception history.
