The article attempts to give an introduction into recent developments in Septuagint research. Using the problem of scriptural interpretation as a guideline, it is demonstrated that there have been different strategies to translate the Hebrew texts in an appropriate way. Even books which usually are regarded as fairly literal (Psalms, Ruth) show a significant range of interpretative elements. This means that the Greek version of the Bible attests to the earliest stages of the history of reception of the Jewish scriptures. Moreover, the translators obviously wanted to express how in their view the Bible should be understood. That is why the Greek graphe used by the writers of the New Testament has gained its theological contour in the process of translation.
