Die klassische islamische Koranexegese eine Annäherung
Zeitschriftenartikel

The article aims at providing a basic characterization of the peculiarities and hermeneutical methodology of pre-modern Islamic exegesis of the Qur'an. The first part of the essay puts forward a comparative analysis of some general features of canonical interpretation that draws inter alia on contemporary studies of Rabbinical midrash. Against the view that canonical interpretation aims primarily at the derivation ofpractical guidance it is argued that it may rather display a decidedly contemplative and scholarly character, while at the same time being concerned to establish, maintain, and extend the canon's formative linkage to the seif-perception and world view of its community. The second part then illustrates the peculiar shape that these general characteristics take in Islamic exegesis by guiding the reader through Fakhr ad-Din ad-Räzis sophisticated discussion of Qur'an 103:1. Particular attention is paid to ad-Räzis adroit usage of various scholarly disciplines, such as textual criticism, philosophical reflection, prophetic tradition, and law.
