The essay reconstructs the basic principles of the so called "Humboldtsche Universitätsreform" that were significantly shaped by Schleiermacher: a specific mixture of education and training, interest in intellectually gifted people as well as "Brotstudenten" (Schiller) and the dedication for the unity of science, art and humanities. In 1810 theology was a perfect representative for this concept of a modern "reform" university. Today it needs to be promoted as an ongoing reality. Theological faculties train different types of abilities for specific professional fields, and cultivate the ideal of the unity of science, art and humanities as one of the main ideas of the intramural interdisciplinary dialogue. Moreover, over the past two centuries theology has also acquired further important functions in the university, especially that of the institutionalized critique of ideologies.
