The article takes a critical look at Udo Schnelle's book "Die getrennten Wege von Römern, Juden und Christen". The approach taken here emphasizes the diversity of what we today call ancient "Judaism" and early "Christianity" and demands to consider the dynamics that can arise from often unexpectedly changed historical situations. Instead of concentrating on the separation of Jews and Christians, a set of questions must be asked, which help - in addition to processes of demarcation - to emphasize examples of positive contact and mutual influence between different Jewish groups and individuals as well as positive reactions to Jesus of Nazareth. The author shares Udo Schnelle's opinion that it is necessary to examine the relationship between ancient Judaism and Christianity in the larger context of the Roman Empire. Finally, the question is raised as to whether there were in fact clear delimitations of a »legitimate« Judaism in antiquity.
