In Eastern Germany, after the end of communism, parishes are often not large enough to preserve historical rural churches. In many places local village non-church members, atheists included, have organised the renovation of such buildings. The author describes the phenomenon in detail, examines the motives, and gives examples of the concepts for using the restored buildings.
