Karl Holl's speech on "Luther's understanding of Religion" at the University of Berlin's Reformation celebration in 1917 was a landmark in twentieth century Reformation research, and an inaugurating component of the "Luther Renaissance". The essay places the speech in the historical context of the First World War, reveals its theological-historical background and deals with the important role it played in Holl's theological oeuvre.
