The paper deals with the relationship between Christian ethics and utilitarianism. The author challenges the commonly held assumption that there is a strong contradiction between these two concepts by discussing two popular reproaches against utilitarianism: The first charges utilitarianism with the sanctification of means, the second with the superficiality of its value-theory. Finally, the author argues that die Christian ethos of agape does not contradict die utilitarian focus on consequences but is complemented by it.
