The paper explores the impact of 'telling stories' for the history of diaconal movements in 19th and 20th century in Germany and North America. Particularly, it refers to the genre of 'deaconess novels' which - following the model of 'social gospel novels' - were popular in the U.S.A. telling the stories of vocation, lifestyle and work of deaconesses. The paper ends with reflections on 'telling stories' as an essential part of the curriculum in diaconal formation.
