The author criticizes the view that the task of ethics consists in the rational justification of morality. Empirical investigations into morality have provided evidence for the claim that moral judgments rest on the emotional evaluation of actions and situations. As a consequence thereof, somebody cannot be convinced of the moral rightness or wrongness of an action by being offered logically sound arguments alone. Quite the contrary, some situation or action has to reveal itself as morally salient, and for this to happen, somebody has to imaginatively enter the relevant Situation and to evaluate it emotionally.
