Ethical decision-making processes are complex and challenging. Members of the medical ethics community are affected by the ethical guidelines they develop. The ethical reasoning they utilize often deepens their professional competencies as well as helping to further the development of ethical guidelines. (Ethical Guideline: An ethical framework that does not dictate specific decisions, but points to key values that help guide decision-maldng in a case specific way) In addition, following this process heightens the sensitivity of individuals in regard to real world ethical questions in practice. This paper is focused on the process of developing an ethical guideline, and the parallel effect that following this guideline has on the individuals involved. The aim is to explain the correlation between developing the process of an ethical guideline and its simultaneaus effects. One possible effect is to sensitize the members who are developing the process as they consider and incorporate the relevant values in the specific ethical situation. Another desired effect is to deepen the moral competencies of ethical reflection and reflective ethical reasoning. Therefore, the systematic process of developing an ethical guideline can pursue two aims: to complete the relevant ethical guideline for ethical decision-making processes and also to develop or to deepen the moral competencies of the members who are involved in the process.
