The ethical competence of pastoral care, including the field of ethical counselling, is an interdisciplinary subject that is discussed by theological ethics and poimenics. Currently, the terms conduct of life, the art of living, and successful living play an important role in the discussion. This contribution determines the relation of moral and ethics from a theological perspective before discussing the usefulness and limits of understanding ethics and poimenics as a theory of successful living and subsequently highlighting the theoretical consequences thereof for the relation of ethics and poimenics. On this backdrop, a more precise understanding of pastoral care and ethics as forms of counselling is specified.
