Ethik und Empirie in der Theologie
Zeitschriftenartikel

In recent decades, philosophical as well as theological ethics have shown considerable interest in incorporating methods and results of empirical research. In the contribution, the purposes and ways of using empiricism in ethical contexts are presented in a systematic manner and corresponding potentials for Protestant ethics are discussed. Especially, the relationship between descriptive and prescriptive elements in ethics is considered. Bioethics serves as a starting point, where the so-called "empirical turn" has lead to a particularly deep involvement with empirical approaches. Specific interests and challenges for theological ethics are deployed. Overall, the thesis is put forward that the use of empiricism is fruitful for theological ethics, provided that the levels and prerequisites of such use are clarified with sufficient precision.
