Media ethic has played an important role in Protestant theology from the very beginning. An essential principle of Protestant media ethics can be seen in human freedom. However, new automation and control possibilitics of digital communication have increased voices, that either directly deny the possibility of human freedom or undermine the awareness or its importance through a technical-reductionist understanding. Using arguments from the program of "Digital Humanism" (Julian Nida-Rümelin), I am going to argue for the fundamental importance of human freedom in the digital age. Finally, from an ethical-theological perspective, I will illuminate a specific depth of this program and the possible role of Christian religion in it articulation.
