The recourse to early Christianity, the delineation of one's own position in Reformation theology as compared to other denominations and religions, and the emphasis on exemplary Christians are crucial aspects of reformatory historiography in Philipp Melanchthon's, Matthias Flacius' und Sebastian Franck's works. The article traces their impact by reference to select examples from the 17th and 19th centuries (Gottfried Arnold and Adolf von Harnack) and concludes with prospects on the end of the 20th century (D.H. Williams and Jonathan Z. Smith).
