Discussion about Martin Heidegger in the last decade has concentrated above all on the question of his relationship to National Socialism. As a result, the mistake was often made in supplut discussion about his thought as a philosopher with moral judgement on his person. Nevertheless, the question cannot be avoided whether there is a probable connection in content between Heidegger's philosophy and his academic experience during his year as Rector in 1933-1934. Volumes 16, 67 and 85 of Heidegger's Collected Works published in 1999 and 2000, supply the necessary documentary evidence for such an analysis. The main thesis made here is that Heidegger's entanglement with National Socialism was not the expression of some original affinity, but rather an overcompensation for something he felt lacking.
