"Public theology" is a theological discourse that has been forming for some time. It addresses recent social-ethical questions which are relevant for society at large, intending to prove the principal reasonability and common approvability of theological contributions to these debates. However, contrary to its original intention and instead of making its specific relevance for the secular public plausible, public theology could just as well demonstrate that religious contributions can be replaced. This essay therefore presupposes a hermeneutic extension of the hitherto pragmatic profile of public theology.
