This contribution deals with the concept of hope of the Christian existentialist Gabriel Marcel,
based on his 1942 programmatic lecture "Entwurf einer Phänomenologie und einer Metaphysik der Hoffnung". Focusing on central ideas of Marcel's concept, his understanding of hope is first described in detail and then contextualized with reference to his contemporaries Sartre, Camus and Jaspers. The concept of hope thus becomes a criterion of difference, as Sartre and Camus reject hope while Marcel and Jaspers advocate in favor of it. The essay concludes with a discussion of the contribution of such a concept of hope to Protestant theology.
