Modern Practical Theology reflected identity especially in its meaning for religious education and pastoral care, that means in its importance for individuals. The ecclesial dimension studied by protestant Practical Theology in Germany focussed on the Volkskirche, in which the majority of the population belongs to a certain church or denomination. The fact, that most of the Protestant churches in Europe are minority-churches (diaspora) has to be considered. Former Practical Theology (C.I. Nitzsch, E. Ch. Achelis et al.) has paid attention not only to the Volkskirche, but also to the diaspora. The current Protestant Practical Theology in Germany shows little interest in this theme, in spite of the situation in East Germany, where Protestant and Catholic churches have become a minority The question of ecclesial identity is more urgent in a minority church than in Volkskirche. Being a Christian in a minority church requires a decision and awareness of ecclesial identity and differences in the relationship to other denominations or non believers. Some Protestant practical theologians tend to define its subject matter this science so, that it changes into religious science and loses its character as a theological enterprise relevant for churches.
