Gerhard Besier, Armin Boyens and Gerhard Lindemann have produced an impressive volume in which they discuss crucial aspects of the history of the ecumenical movement in the era of the Cold War. The Geneva-based World Council of Churches with special emphasis on the relationship to the German Protestant Churches (Boyens); the role of the American National Council of Churches and of those American church-bodies which opposed the ecumenical movement (Besier); and the Prague Christian Peace Conference founded in 1958 which provided a second forum for ecumenical activities (Lindemann). This study is based on source-material which has not been available for research so far. Some of the conclusions, especially those referring to the far-reaching influence of the secret services of Warsaw Pact countries, are likely to lead to controversies.
