The article "Impulses of the Reformation to the current understanding of family" initially deals with theological, methodological und historic-hermeneutical prolegomena following Ulrich Barth and Ernst Troeltsch. Subsequently the study reconstructs Luther's conception of the household and its premodern structure, as well as its preadaptive advances to the modern age. Finally the essay evaluates potentials of Luther's theology to the process of secularization (in the meaning of Niklas Luhmann) and to the development of the modern conception of family. In respect to Luther's two kingdoms doctrine family lost its religious dignity and society evolved into modern functionally differentiated society. In this concept family represents a point of intersection and underlies the rational standards of e.g. law, mass media and social sciences.
