This article surveys various new (protestant) forms of worship which arose in Germany in the late 20th century and endeavours to explore their theological profile. They are "intensive" - in common preparation - and "non-committal" - with regard to the worshipping community. The new forms of worship, which are influences by ecumenical insights from Helsinki/Finland or Willow Creek/ USA, serve the needs of those people who search for God beyond traditional patterns of worship. Compared to the forms of worship which blossomed in die early 1960s their intention is not political but religious and focussed on spiritual practice. They prove to be die liturgical expression of religious individualization: Liturgy becomes a marketable resource. Up to now this phenomenon and its theological challenges have not been adequately considered by liturgical studies.
