Der Problembezug des Artikels ist ein zweifacher: In methodologischer Hinsicht geht es um die Erprobung der Erklärungsmöglichkeiten theoriegeleiteter historisch-vergleichender Analysen. In thematischer Hinsicht interessiert die Genese unterschiedlicher Strukturen beruflicher Ausbildung in Frankreich und Deutschland. Dementsprechend wird zunächst (Abschnitt 1) ein analyseleitender Bezugsrahmen entfaltet, der eine in systemtheoretischen Kategorien gefaßte Modellierung des sozialen Handlungsraums beruflicher Ausbildung mit einer der historischen Makro-Soziologie entlehnten Konzeptualisierung verfassungspolitisch-rechtlicher und sozial-kultureller Voraussetzungen verbindet. Eine funktional-konfigurativ geführte Vergleichsanalyse sucht dann (Abschnitt 2) die in Frankreich und Deutschland im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert gewählten differenten Lösungsmuster für das analoge Problem der beruflichen Breitenqualifizierung auf Facharbeiterniveau zu erklären, indem sie sie auf allgemeine strukturelle Gestaltungsprobleme des "Überschneidungsbereichs" Berufsausbildung einerseits, auf die dafür historisch jeweils verfügbaren besonderen Gestaltungsressourcen andererseits bezieht.
The article is directed to two interrelated problems: The methodological issue at stake is to offer evidence of the explanatory potentialities of comparative historical analyses. The historiographical issue of interest is to elucidate the emergence, at the end of the 19th Century, of divergent patterns of vocational education in France and Germany. In section one, therefore, the theoretical framework is outlined the composite structure of which informs the functional-configurative approach of the comparative study in section two. In this framework the conceptual model of vocational education as an "area of overlap", which refers to Niklas Luhmann's sociological Systems theory, and central concepts of Stein Rokkan's nation building model are combined. The comparative analysis, accordingly, aims at explaining the divergent French and German Solutions to the analogous problem of qualifying skilled workers for commerce and industry by relating them, on the one hand, to some general structural problems of vocational education which can be identified within the "overlap model" and, on the other hand, to the particular operational resources that were available in the different historical settings.
